Supervenience & Emergentism: A Critical Study in Philosophy of Mind

چکیده

The paper intends to clarify whether the supervenience theory of mind, with special reference to Kim, can be identified with the emergence theory of mind. Kim’s thesis admits that the mental properties are in some sense dependent on the physical properties. Such supervenience might be understood to mean that there cannot be two events alike in all physical respects, i.e. an object cannot alter in some mental respect without altering in the physical respect. My aim in this paper is to clarify that the emergence theory of mind is not identical with the supervenience theory of mind, because emergentism is a non-material theory of mind. This theory maintains that mind or consciousness emerges from material object, but it will not be reducible to that matter. Thus, emergentism is an anti-reductionists theory of mind; and at the same time, it establishes a new order of existence with its special laws of qualities.

Structural realism and the mind

This paper considers whether, and how, the mind can be incorporated into structural realism. Section 1 begins with some definitions, and briefly reviews the main problems which beset structural realism. The existence of the mind is proffered as an additional problem, to which the rest of the paper is devoted. Three different philosophies of the mind are analysed, beginning with eliminative mate...

Varieties of Supervenience

Supervenience is a concept borrowed from moral philosophy by philosophy of mind to solve the mind-body problem. Supervenience and neuroscience

The philosophical technical term “supervenience” is frequently used in the philosophy of mind as a concise way of characterizing the core idea of physicalism in a manner that is neutral with respect to debates between reductive physicalists and nonreductive physicalists. I argue against this alleged neutrality and side with reductive physicalists. I am especially interested here in debates betw...

Emergent Causation

The notion of an emergent property has aroused much recent discussion among both scientists and philosophers. Many quite different kinds of properties have been described as ‘emergent’, the only clear common factor being the broad idea that when a physical system of sufficient complexity is in a suitable configuration new properties ‘emerge’ in a way that could not have been predicted from the ...

Indian Philosophy of Mind: A Comparative Study

In this paper I explore surprising parallels in the arguments between dualists and materialists in the philosophy of mind in India and the West. In particular, I compare the Nyaya School of India with Cartesian dualism and its Western defenders and the Carvaka School of India with contemporary Western materialists.
